Type 2 Diabetes – How Choosing High Glycemic Foods Affects Your Fat Storage – Although we all know how important it is to eat a balanced diet consisting of the right food, there are still plenty of people who do not always follow that advice. While this way of thinking is harmful enough, it can be even more detrimental for a person who has been diagnosed with full-blown Type 2 diabetes.
When you choose to eat specific foods, it actually starts a series of actions in your body. The food you eat determines the type and level of the specific hormones released into your bloodstream. If a particular food is ranked high on the glycemic index, it means it is not only digested at a much faster pace but, it is also absorbed into the bloodstream much more quickly.
When high glycemic food is eaten, it unnaturally raises your blood sugar level. This in turn, increases the amount of fat being stored in your body. This is why it is important to use the glycemic index to determine your food selections.
The glycemic index sorts food by how it is absorbed into your bloodstream. How quickly it is absorbed and how well it is digested, both play a crucial role in how they impact your blood sugar. The dramatic rise in your blood sugar is not nearly as important as the subsequent crash afterwards… when the effect of the blood sugar spike has ended. This is how many people with Type 2 diabetes get into trouble with hypoglycemia after a meal.
When a Type 2 diabetic eats food which has a high carb count, your body doesn’t know what to do with the excess sugar and calories. As your blood becomes saturated with sugar, your pancreas reacts by producing more of the hormone insulin to try to counteract the high level of sugar floating around in your bloodstream.
Type 2 diabetics might understand the process up to this point but, they probably aren’t prepared for what happens next! What some diabetics do not realize is… insulin is considered a storage hormone. What does that mean? It means it dramatically slows down your body’s natural reaction to burn fat that is stored. Instead of allowing this stored energy to be utilized by your body, it takes this new source of sugar and immediately stores it in your body.
Whenever you eat high glycemic food, you are not only harming yourself in a short-term situation but, also in the long-run as well. This isn’t to say you can never enjoy your favorite dessert or carbs again. But it does mean if you plan to do so, you need to make arrangements ahead of time so the negative effects are kept to an absolute minimum.
